At US$29.99, it allowed adventurous Mac users to sample Apple's new operating system and provide feedback for the actual release. The initial version of Mac OS X, 10.0 'Cheetah', was released on March 24, 2001. Older Mac OS applications could still run under early Mac OS X versions, using an environment called 'Classic'.

Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel). March 24, 2006 -- Unidentified programmers have hacked the Intel version of Mac OS X to enable it to boot a Dell PC. Burn the kingdom mac os. A file called the 'JaS4.2b patch' can be used to create a customized installer DVD for installing on a Dell PC.
A website called MacaDell describes the patch. The MacDell site has also has a page that describes how to use the JaS4.2b patch to create a customized installer disc for Mac OS X.
Using the hack is illegal because it breaks Apple’s Mac OS X license agreement, which specifies that the operating system be run on an “Apple-labeled computer.”
According to MacaDell, work on the hack began when a Russian hacker known as Maxxuss cracked the encrypted security layer in Mac OS X that usually requires the software to be installed on a certain Mac model. Other hackers added to the work, and a programmer known as JaS put the work together in the JaS4.2b patch.
The hack emulates the EFI boot firmware found in Intel-based Macs. It also emulates an instruction set called SSE3 in order to support processors older than the Dual Core used in the Intel Macs. MacaDell reports that the hack doesn’t work on every computer, and doesn’t support some functions, such as wireless networking and certain audio and video cards.
At this point, the Intel version of Mac OS X is only available with the purchase of an Intel-based Mac.

I might do this myself someday but I'm not in a rush because I can't think of much reason to use the Mac OSX. But it sounds like a cool project.

Question is, why would you want to? Aren't there easier ways to mess up a PC? I mean, in theory at least you could simply take the PC out to the shooting range and a couple dozen rounds of 308 ammo..

Frankly, I prefer Apple hardware to Dell's, reasoning that the quality/integration is more than covered by the pricing difference. I just got a last-edition PPC iMac for my kids, and it is literally a beautiful experience.

It'd be nice ot see OSX hummin' on my dual core AMD 4400 with x1900xt ATI vid card as opposed to simply loping along this dual core Intel iMac with its feeble ATI x1600..

How would this affect perfromance of graphics chips and other hardware?

I just have to wonder; does Apple actually support this in some sort of flavor? I mean, theres a small army out there hacking Apples OS for use on 'other' hardware than what is 'approved'. All the while, it's being done for free.

Well, for starters, it probably only runs on Intel-based systems (so my AMD would be out of luck.) As for vid cards, I'd be reasonably sure it would work with most recent ATI cards (as the Catalyst drivers, on the whole, are the same) since Apple's been using thoe for ages; I'd be less sure abou Nvidia or Intel integrated graphics. As for sound and such, since Apples doesn't support add-in sound cards (a la Sound Blaster) they probably wouldn't function since there wouldn't be a driver, obviously, to support them. But most USB devices probably function fine and then you're really just left with how well would the networking functions operate--I'd be willing to guess that most, basic, intgrated networking cards woulud work fine (but that's only a guess.) Believe me, if I had an Intel box laying about, I'd be doing this right now :(

'down goes Apple ..'
Yeah, it's not like anyone could make money just selling operating systems.

The range here locally frowns on this. I just happen to have..heard this from someone.

I don't understand why Apple doesn't make a crossover OS for PC's. Still keep their Apple hardware, but expand to the PC market as well. Those Apple lunatics will still buy the Apple hardware.

I don't understand why Apple doesn't make a crossover OS for PC's. Apple right now has a finite and small universe of devices and drivers to test. That's comfy and easy and they like it.

Presuming they run equally well on a given set of hardware, there's no way Ubuntu beats OSX 10.4. Not yet.
